Washington SR22 Insurance 101
What is SR22 Insurance in Washington?
In the state of Washington, SR22 insurance is usually required when a driver has had their license suspended because they’ve been involved in a DUI (driving under the influence), but the suspension could be for other reasons as well. An SR22 is not a type of insurance; it’s a filing that’s endorsed onto an auto insurance policy or a non owner’s insurance policy. It’s basically a form that the insurance company files with the DMV on your behalf letting them know that you have an active liability insurance policy. This is what the department of motor vehicles requires in order to reinstate your license.
Length of Time an SR22 is required in Washington
In Washington, an SR22 is usually required for 36 consecutive months. An insured must renew their policy at least 15 days prior to it cancelling to avoid having their license suspended. After the SR22 is not needed anymore, it can be removed from your auto insurance policy.
Cost of SR22 Insurance in Washington
The SR22 itself isn’t much, it’s usually a one-time filing fee of about $20. It’s the actual auto insurance policy that will be a recurring charge.
